Antique Sterling Silver & Guilloché Enamel Desk Box by Foster & Nightingale, featuring “Teasing” by Franz von Stuck
An exceptional and highly substantial American Art Deco sterling silver cigarette or desk box of grand proportions. The exterior lid showcases a vibrant, translucent orange engine-turned guilloché enamel border featuring an intricate wavy-line matrix. Centered is a beautifully preserved fine art panel reproducing the famous Symbolist motif “Teasing” (“Neckerei”) by renowned German Secessionist master Franz von Stuck (18631928), cleanly inscribed with the title in English for the luxury export market.
The box features a scalloped front thumb-piece tab opening to reveal a luxurious, pristine solid gold-wash vermeil interior applied to prevent environmental tarnish from tobacco oils. The bottom exhibits a heavy bare sterling chassis displaying a crisp, highly legible “F&N” cartouche maker’s mark alongside the “STERLING” purity stamp, definitively identifying the piece as a scarce luxury production by Foster & Nightingale.
Accompanied by its historic modern provenance, including an archival inventory string tag from New York Antiquities (12th St, NYC) matching internal inventory Stock No. 405. An outstanding crossover piece appealing to collectors of premium American silversmithing, Art Deco enamelware, and Turn-of-the-Century Symbolist fine art.
